For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and every day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
4 my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the LORD,
for he has been good to me.

Trust is an amazing thing. It is at first given freely in almost all relationships until it has been violated. Once broken it is extremely hard to regain.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that is what is going on here. I don't think the Psalmist is saying, "Hey, I put my trust in you and you came up short. I am going to give you a second chance."
I do, however, think what he is saying is this: "I have allowed my circumstances to dictate my trust in you LORD. When things are going well, I trust you. When they are not going well, I begin to doubt or even remove my trust in you. Beginning today I am going to place my trust in your unfailing love regardless of the situation; good or bad. Because your unfailing love, LORD, is the one thing that has proven over and over to be trustworthy." The evidence of the LORD's unfailing love for the Psalmist is found in his salvation by the LORD; a salvation that has given him a heart that rejoices - in all circumstances.
For the Psalmist, trust in the LORD's unfailing love brings about a change in the way he faces difficult situations. The "How long" questions are replaced with singing to the LORD and proclaiming that the LORD "has been good to me" to all who can hear.
LORD, I too want to place my trust specifically in your unfailing love today. I find evidence of that love in a heart that rejoices when I think of the salvation you provided for me on Calvary. May my day today be filled with singing of how you have been good to me. May my world and my communities hear my song, see my LORD, and may their hearts too rejoice in your salvation. --- AMEN.
